Start-ups and spin-offs face many challenges: Product development, market entry, financing, business model - the list is long. An experienced mentor can help. He/she has expertise and contacts and knows how things work.

At ZAT Leoben, each team is assigned two mentors:

- Two heads are better than one.

- You get more expertise.

- You get more network.

Every startup is different. Two mentors help to find the right solutions. The mentors support the teams in the pre-seed and seed programme and provide advice and assistance. What makes a good mentor? The best mentors are experts in their field and ...

They have experience as an entrepreneur or manager. They are a critical partner who helps solve problems. They have a strong network and motivate the founders.

Success stories from the ZAT

Many start-ups have taken the decisive steps thanks to mentoring at ZAT. Whether innovative materials, smart technologies or ground-breaking processes - with the right support, an idea can become a successful company.

Here we present three teams that are supported by mentors and are working on their ideas:

🔬 MPC² - Manuel Prohaska with mentors Paul Linhardt and Jo Eijkenboom

MPC² is working on a corrosion test. Manuel Prohaska and his team are focussing on electrochemical testing methods, in particular the DL-EPR test. They want to use it to assess the corrosion resistance of certain metal alloys. MPC² wants to develop and offer a portable corrosion testing device. It is intended to enable non-destructive testing directly on site. The aim is to save time and costs for customers and improve quality assurance in production by using fast and sensitive test methods.

To this end, they have brought Paul Linhardt, an expert in electrochemistry, and Jo Eijkenboom, an experienced business strategist, onto the team.

🚀 IQuMa - Martin Schoiswohl and Marcel Sorger with mentors Horst Purgstaller and Franz Salomon

IQuMa helps companies to digitally transform their production processes. IQuMa uses cyber-physical production systems (CPPS) to do this. These can be used to analyse data and control machines so that they work independently. By using machine learning algorithms, IQuMa creates more transparency, stability and efficiency in production. A particular focus is on ‘white box’ approaches that combine sensor data with forming simulations in order to realise almost real-time simulations.

The two mentors Horst Purgstaller and Franz Salomon support the IQuMa team with their many years of entrepreneurial experience and knowledge of how to deal with complex tasks.

🌍 Fiber Elements - Wolfgang Fiel, sustainability in focus with Martha Mühlburger and Günter Neureiter

Sustainability is the focus of Fiber Elements. Together with his team, Wolfgang Fiel develops innovative basalt reinforcement systems for the construction industry. The new basalt fibre systems are better and more environmentally friendly than conventional construction steel. They reduce CO2 emissions, are corrosion-resistant and enable resource-saving construction methods with lower concrete consumption. Mentor Martha Mühlburger completed her doctorate at the University of Leoben, where she was later responsible for finance and infrastructure. She brings valuable experience in corporate finance and sustainable technology development. Günter Neureiter complements the team with his expertise in industrial value chains, market strategies and the scaling of innovative products. As a result, Fiber Elements is optimally prepared for growth and market penetration.

Do you have a startup and want to benefit from the best mentors? Or are you an experienced entrepreneur and want to pass on your knowledge? Then mentoring at ZAT is just right for you!
