At a time when aviation, as a global growth sector, is increasingly becoming the focus of climate policy discussions, the development of alternative, carbon-neutral energy sources is gaining strategic importance. The current article ‘More efficient e-fuels to make aviation more environmentally friendly’ by Der Standard addresses this issue and highlights the potential of synthetic aviation fuels in the context of technical feasibility, energy efficiency and ecological sustainability.
E-fuels, produced from green hydrogen and captured CO₂, are considered a promising option for operating existing aircraft fleets in a more climate-friendly manner without having to make far-reaching infrastructural adjustments. At the same time, their production processes face challenges in terms of efficiency, energy requirements and scalability.
The team at Sisyphus, a spin-off of Montanuni, is working intensively on these issues and researching innovative approaches to increasing the efficiency of power-to-liquid processes, integrating renewable energy sources and evaluating the entire value chain of e-fuels. Through interdisciplinary research and close cooperation with industry partners, Sisyphus is helping to translate scientific findings into practical solutions and thus actively shaping the transformation of aviation towards climate neutrality.
